According to CBS New York, the Barclays Center plans to have a green mat-like plant installed on the roof as a complementary design to its famous rust-colored structure. The plant, known as sedum, is set to be installed later this year, and fortunately for the arena's maintenance staff, won't need to be water once it is planted. In addition to making the arena more pleasing to the eye, the installation of a green roof will make the Barclays Center's roof match the design that is currently on top of the transit entrance outside of the arena.
So what does this mean for visitors and Brooklyn residents? Though it may seem inviting, the roof will not be open to the public. Instead, the project is meant to brighten the surrounding community and overall, make the arena more visually appealing in a way that imitates how city residents view Central Park.
In terms of construction, the Barclays Center is already equipped to hold a roof lawn. To complete the project, a second roof will be installed on top of the existing roof, and the planting will be done on top.
April is Earth Month, and it seems like the Barclays Center knows just how to celebrate! What do you think of their plans to install a green roof?
