Roof Repair and Replacement Timeline

Phil's Main Roofing

Since roof repair or replacement is quite an extensive project, choosing the right time to get started is critical for the construction process to run as smoothly as possible. Although sometimes the timing is determined by mother nature (if your roof is damaged by a storm, for example), it's best to try and schedule your project for optimal times throughout the year to make sure it's a complete success.

Before confirming a start date, it's important to consider the weather conditions and temperatures in your area for that particular time of year. For example, although in the winter months you'll likely be able to choose any date, harsh weather conditions and freezing temperatures can easily setback your project. Furthermore, even though summer brings warm and sunny days, if it's too hot out, your materials can be damaged before they even make it onto your roof!

Since your roof is an exterior project and therefore weather dependent, we suggest scheduling any work for spring, late summer, or fall!

Are you looking to have work done to your roof sometime this fall? Contact Phil's Main Roofing today! We'd love the opportunity to assist you with your next project. To schedule your FREE estimate or to make an appointment for repairs or replacement, please give us a call at (203) 838-4545!

Common Causes of Roof Damage

Phil's Main Roofing

If you're a property owner that's struggled with their roof, then you might be familiar with the different types of damage that can occur. But what you're probably a bit unsure about is how the damage came to be! It's easy to say that there's a leak in your roof or that your shingles are curling, but figuring out why can prove to be a bit more difficult.

Are you trying to narrow down the possible causes of damage that you've dealt with? The following are a few of the most common causes of roof problems for you to consider:
  1. The sun: Unfortunately, the sun's UV rays can cause your roof to deteriorate over time. Just because they're exposed to the sun on a daily basis can cause your roof's materials to dry out, crack, or become loose and fall off.
  2. Animals: Birds and other small animals are often guilty of poking holes in your roof or even tearing off shingles if they want to get into your attic bad enough.
  3. Poor ventilation: If you don't have the proper ventilation system installed, it's likely that your roof will reap the consequences. A poorly ventilated attic can cause your roof to become too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter, and it's often difficult for shingles to withstand the extreme temperatures.
Has your roof been giving you trouble lately? Ask Phil's Main Roofing for help! We offer a variety of services to the both the commercial and residential markets to assist all property owners with their roof systems. Phil's Main Roofing

Is your roof starting to look old and outdated? If so, has this encouraged you to think about roof replacement? Too often homeowners assume that it's time to replace their roof as soon as it starts to appear worn down. However, it's important to realize that this old, brittle look could be a result of a layer of dirt that has built up over time. Unless your shingles are approaching the 25 year mark or seem to be falling off, it's likely that you can eliminate your roof worries just by performing a thorough cleaning.

Thanks to Angie's List, we've put together a list of reasons why you should clean your roof before making the decision to replace it, see below:
  • Those dark black stains you see are not necessarily indicators of roof damage. Such stains usually result from moss, which a proper cleaning can easily remove.
  • Cleaning your roof regularly can actually strengthen and protect it from future damage. If you've repaired or replaced your roof recently, cleaning it is one of the best ways to ensure that the money you've put into it won't go to waste.
  • The cost of cleaning your roof is significantly lower than the cost of total roof replacement. In fact, splurging on a roof cleaning every so often can prove to have financial benefits in the long run since it will help lengthen the lifespan of your current roof.
Here at Phil's Main Roofing, we believe that cleaning your roof regularly is one of the best forms of preventive maintenance. In addition to increasing curb appeal and giving your home a freshly polished look, cleaning can often solve many of the issues you come across and prevent them from happening again in the future.

Although remodeling or renovating your home can have financial benefits in the long run, the process of getting there is often an expensive one. The good news, however, is that even with a very tight budget, there are plenty of routes you can take to improve your home and increase its value without having to spend a penny more than you wanted to. In fact, there are some approaches that will even result in you having money left over - what a win, win!

If you're looking for ways to improve your home without breaking the bank, check out some of these great budget-friendly tips below:

1. Before spending a lot of money on new furniture or home decor, stop by your local vintage store and see what they have in stock. You'd be surprised at how many great pieces are available in your price range that mimic exactly what you would've bought elsewhere!

2. Instead of painting every room, select an accent color that matches your current design and only paint one wall in each. This will save you tons of money and even time if you plan on painting yourself.

3. If you're looking to expand on the living space you have but can't afford a dormer or other extension, we suggest using mirrors around your home. Mirrors are a particular piece of furniture that can create the illusion of more space and make a small space seem much larger.

Does a new roof happen to be on the top of your home improvement to-do list? Contact Phil's Main Roofing today! We are a family owned and operated roofing company located in Norwalk CT that has been serving CT and NY for over 65 years. Should I Pressure Wash My Roof?

Phil's Main Roofing

(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

If you've got moss or algae growing on your roof, you're probably searching for the right cleaning method to help you remove it. Since these pesky organisms are essentially eating your roof, the longer you allow them to thrive there, the more likely it is that you will have to repair or replace your roof in the future.

When it comes to removing moss or algae, many homeowners (and even some professional roofers) believe that high pressure power washing is the best way to eliminate dark and dirty stains. However, the truth is that you should never turn to high pressure power washing to clean your roof due to the damaging effects it can have. If you're trying to prevent damage by cleaning, you definitely won't want to encourage it by using this method!

While high pressure power washing can help remove even the toughest of stains elsewhere, this method can seriously damage your shingles. Additionally, this method doesn't guarantee the complete removal of the moss and algae that you're currently battling. This is because high pressure power washing can actually leave the initial root systems behind, and therefore, these organisms can be revived shortly after you've taken the steps to eliminate them.

Before you allow a contractor to clean your roof, we recommend asking them which method they'll use first. Likewise, if you plan to clean your roof yourself, we suggest researching some alternative methods that will provide you with better, safer results.

Are you looking for a professional to help you clean your roof? Call Phil's Main Roofing! We offer cleaning and maintenance programs to help you with the upkeep of your roof and will use only the best cleaning methods to ensure that your roof retains its strength for years to come. Getting The Most For Your Money: Ways To Make Your Roof Last

Phil's Main Roofing
(203) 838-4545

Just like any other improvement you make to your home, replacing your roof is a huge investment. No matter how big or small your project may be, roof repair and replacement is one area of home improvement where it's absolutely necessary to make sure you're having quality work done, even if that means spending a bit more money than planned.

Since roof work often ends up being on the expensive side, and since a functioning roof is crucial for your safety, you'll want to take as many proactive measures as possible to make it last. The following are a few things you can do to lengthen your roof's lifespan and make your investment worth every penny:
  1. Clean your gutters regularly. When leaves and debris pile up too high, water can seep into the roof and lead to the spread of roof rot.
  2. Trim any branches around your roof to prevent leaves and branches from falling onto the surface. Not only can they damage your roof by falling, but overhanging branches also give outdoor animals access to your roof.
  3. Inspect your roof after every major storm and look for any lose or missing shingles. It's also important to look for any damaged flashing around your vents, chimneys or skylights.
  4. Remove leaves from your roof regularly, especially during the fall, to reduce the likelihood that they will pile up in your roof valleys or near chimneys. If not removed, a collection of leaves can cause moisture to build in your roof as they start to decompose.
Most importantly, one of the best things you can do to get the most out of your roof is have a professional clean it and perform preventive maintenance programs regularly. After all, they have the experience, education and solutions needed to ensure that your roof remains in tact. At Phil's Main Roofing, our roofing experts are available to perform all kinds of service to help you with your roof. Just ask us about our maintenance programs! We'll set you up with one that works best for you.

Pitched Roof Designs

Phil's Main Roofing
(203) 838-4545

As you work with your contractor to design your new roof, one of the first decisions you'll have to make is whether it will be pitched (angled) or flat. Should a pitched roof be suitable for your home, you'll then have to decide which angles and shape you will use to build it!

From an architectural standpoint, there are 4 designs that are commonly used when it comes to building a pitched roof. With help from the DIY Network, we've outlined each of the designs below to help you make a decision on which shape your new roof will take as it's constructed!

Gabled:
Gabled roofs are characterized by the way that the roof slopes around a triangular extension of the end wall. The triangular piece is typically referred to as the gable.

Hipped:
By definition, a hip is the joint between adjacent slopes of a roof. If you choose this type of pitched roof and you plan for a more complex design, you might have several hips throughout your structure.

Shed:
Shed roofs are very simple in their nature. This type of roof only has one slope and is usually used on "lean-to structures" such as additions to your home, for example.

Mansard:
A mansard roof is a modified version of a pitched roof that allows for more living area in the roof space. Essentially, this raises your walls and the roof so that you are able to have functioning rooms where your attic or roof would otherwise fall.
