How to Safely Remove Outdoor Christmas Lights

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Ready to remove your outdoor lighting now that Christmas has come and gone? Taking them down safely is just as important as putting them up. Between tangled wires and gutter damage, there are a number of things that can go wrong if you’re not careful about the process.

Because your safety is our number one priority, we put together a few tips for when it comes time to remove your holiday lights:

Unplug.
Before you start untangling your lights and unclipping them from your gutters, be sure to unplug the lights from your outlets and power strips. This will not only help to preserve your lights for next year, but it will most importantly prevent any accidental electric shock.

Avoid tugging.
It might be tempting to tug your lights off of your roof for quick removal, but in doing so you could cause damage to your home. Instead, unravel your lights slowly, using one hand to loop them around your elbow. This will help to keep your lights in working order for next year!

Watch for powerlines.
Do you have power lines that hang low to your roof? If so, they should be fixed for obvious reasons. But if you haven’t gotten around to adjusting low power lines yet, be wary when removing your lights, as they can easily get tangled. Not to mention it is a major fire hazard.

Check for damage.
Look for pinched or stapled wires, or even broken bulbs. All these types of damages can cause a fire hazard or can be dangerous to touch. If you notice that your lights are damaged, take precaution by making sure all wires are unplugged and you’re wearing proper gear, such as gloves and protective glasses.

If you come across any dangers or roof damage while removing your Christmas lights, turn to Phil’s Main Roofing. Our roofing professionals are here to help with all kinds of repairs your roof might need this month and throughout the year! Prep Your Home for Vacation

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Leaving on a jet plane this holiday season? Before you pack your bags and get on your way, be sure your home is safe and secure. We know that getting ready for vacation can be stressful, so we’ve put together the below checklist to help you get your home in order before you walk out the door:

Set alarms. Let your security company know that you will be away and make sure your security alarms are working properly. It also helps to give your security codes to close family members, neighbors, or friends.

Ask for help. If you’re giving security codes to a few trusted people in your social circle, kindly ask them to also keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. And if you have pets at home, ask if they don’t mind looking after them. And don't forget: offer to return the favor when they plan their next vacation!

Trim trees. Winters can oftentimes bring unexpected storms and heavy gusts of wind, so trim any low-hanging tree limbs to prevent damage to your home or your neighbor’s home. This rule especially applies to ones that are close to your roof, as a falling tree limb can cause an expensive repair.

Light it up. An obvious sign that tells you’re away on vacation is a dark home. So be subtle about your getaway by setting timers for lights inside and outside the home. That way, no one will know the difference.

Clear gutters. If it rains when you’re away, you can almost guarantee there will be damage if your gutters, downspouts, and drains aren’t cleared away. So before you leave be sure you clear any leaves and debris from these areas.

Protect your home and family this holiday vacation by taking a few precautions, such as the ones listed above! If you come across any roofing issues while you’re away, turn to Phil’s Main Roofing! We are an award-winning roofing company, serving Norwalk and the surrounding areas. To learn more about our services, visit us at www.philsmainroofing.com or give us a call at (203) 838-4545 today!

Top Roofing Tips

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Preparing to install a new roof or make a few repairs? Your roof is one of the most fundamental components of your home, which means maintaining it can be tricky. That being said, it’s crucial to stay safe and make smart choices by keeping these top roofing tips in mind:

Stay safe.
You know what they say - safety comes first! Before starting any DIY roofing project, protect yourself from danger by wearing the necessary clothing and using the proper equipment. For example, if your ladder is wobbly, consider purchasing a new one. If your shoes don’t have gripped souls, buy or borrow ones that do. Know when you should avoid going up on the roof and be patient if problems arise.

Ask about insurance.
Make sure your roofing contractor has workers’ compensation and liability insurance in case any accidents occur. Ask to see certificates to prove this information and make a quick call to the insurance carrier to ensure that the insurance is valid.

Choose quality.
When it comes to choosing a new roof for your home, come to a fair compromise between quality and aesthetics. Your roof is a huge investment and has the potential to boost your home’s value, so while you want to choose a beautiful material, you also want your roof to last a long time. For example, asphalt shingles are more sturdy than wood shakes, but can mimic a similar style. However, what's most important is that you know the climate you live in and which material will best suit your home’s needs.

Keep gutters clear.
No matter the season, be sure your gutters are free of leaves, snow, debris, and rain water. Your roof can suffer from clogs if your gutters aren’t cleaned periodically, so wait until the weather clears up after a winter storm or spring shower passes and inspect the situation.

At Phil’s Main Roofing, we know that sometimes homeowners want to tackle tricky projects themselves, but just know we are here to help when you need us! We are fully licensed and insured in the state of Connecticut and Westchester County, NY, and have been helping residential and commercial customers with their roofs for over 65 years. How to Safely Remove Snow from Your Roof

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Once winter officially arrives, you can almost always guarantee that there will be snow in Connecticut. Although snow looks light and fluffy, large amounts of it can damage your roof if it’s not removed.

Snow removal requires the proper tools and guidelines to ensure that your roof stays in top shape for the winter. That being said, below are a few tips to keep in mind when it snows:

Skip the shovel - You might think that using your snow shovel is the best tool for removing snow from our roof when the truth is it can possibly damage your shingles. As snow blower can be dangerous as well, so use a roof rake insted and be gentle with your roof.

Avoid sprinkling salt - When your walkway is covered in ice, you probably sprinkle some salt to avoid accidental slipping. But when it comes to your roof, avoid applying salt products to your roof as this can discover your shingles.

Stay alert - When removing snow on your own, be sure to look out for any large chunks of snow or ice that might unexpectedly slide off your roof, especially if you roof has a sleep slope.

Hire a professional - If the snow is excessive, then snow removal might be tricky. If this is the case, your safest bet is to call a professional to get the job done, as this can be a dangerous and tricky job to tackle on our own.

Are you prepared to handle any snow that comes your way this winter? If at any time you feel like this job is more than you can handle, turn to Phil's Main Roofing for help! Our team of licensed roofers would be happy to assist and are fully equipped with the proper tools and techniques to remove the snow from your roof. Timeless Exterior Colors for Your Home

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

As a homeowner, one of the most essential projects you can take on is boosting your home’s curb appeal. When it comes to sprucing up your home’s exterior, the first thing to think about is the color of your home.

At Phil’s Main Roofing, we know that first impressions are lasting impressions. That is why we have put together a list of timeless exterior colors that you will love for years to come:

Warm Beige - Beige is always a safe bet when designing your home’s exterior, but sometimes it can feel a bit cold. To give this neutral shade a more cozy feel, consider a warm beige hue for your siding.

White - It never goes out of style! Whether you choose white for your siding or window trims, this color helps to neutralize your home. It also matches almost any roofing color you choose!

Earthy green - Want a more organic appeal? If so, then earthy green shades are an ideal option! A muted green with a summit gray undertone keeps the exterior of your home looking neutral, but also provides a more colorful alternative.

Red - Going red might be a bold move, but it’s also one of those colors that we haven’t seen go out of style yet. Stick with a traditional brick or barn red to mimic a classic, rural look. Plus, it will make your home feel more cozy!

Slate Blue - Time and time again, we see homes painted in slate blue - typically for colonial homes, as this color tends to blend well with the suburban architecture.

Most important factor to take into consideration when choosing a hue for your home’s exterior is to find one that will not only match the architecture, but also the color of your roof. Selecting colors for your home is a major decision, so even if you don’t plan on starting your next project until spring blooms again, it’s never too early to start planning ahead!

If you need help deciding which colors will look best for your home (including the color of your roof), turn to Phil’s Main Roofing! For over 65 years, our family owned company has proudly served Fairfield County and the surrounding areas with our expertise in residential and commercial roofing. How to Clean Roof Shingle Stains

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Have you hung up your holiday lights yet? If so, you may have noticed that the shingles on your roof are stained. With a sunny weekend ahead of us, you might want to head outside and take care of the mess. Not sure where to begin? Don’t worry - we’ve got you covered!

Below are a few tips to keep in mind when it comes to cleaning your shingles:

Use the right chemicals
Do you spy algae stains? Typically, you can remove them using a mixture of chemicals, such as trisodium phosphate, bleach, and water. However, it’s important to not overuse these harsh chemicals, as they can shorten the lifespan of your shingles.

Grab the necessary tools
Once you settle on the right cleaning products to get rid of those unwanted roof stains, here are a few tools you will need to grab prior to cleaning:
  • Garden hose (with spray nozzle)
  • Old clothing
  • Gripping shoes
  • A ladder
Be safe
Not only will you need the necessary chemicals and tools to clean those stains off your shingles, but you will also need protective gear. For instance, be sure to wear rubber gloves and goggles to keep your hands and eyes safe from dirt and debris.

Take preventative measures
One of the best steps you can take to protect your roof from algae and other types of stains is to take preventative measures. For example, once your roof is clean, install a strip of copper or zinc coated sheet metal on each side of your roof and below the ridge.

How to Safely Hang Your Christmas Lights

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Got the holidays on your mind? We know we do! If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to light up your home with your favorite holiday decorations. Although Christmas lights seem perfectly harmless, the truth is they can actually cause harm if you’re not careful.

Before you get up on your ladder, keep the following tips in mind:

Test your lights. Before hanging up your holiday lights, plug them in and carefully inspect. Look for broken or missing bulbs or worn out wiring. Replace your lights if necessary, as any of these deficiencies can be a fire hazard.

Be smart with a ladder. Before climbing your way up to your roof, be sure you place your ladder firmly on solid, flat ground. Then, rest it against the eaves of your roof at an angle that will be comfortable for when standing. If you lean your ladder against your gutter, place a 2 by 4 inside the gutter to secure the ladder and keep your gutters protected as well.

Strategically hang your lights. The safest place to hang your lights without damaging your roof is along the eaves. Use plastic clips that cling firmly and rest the lights inside the hook - this will protect your roof and avoid you from having to staple or pin down your decorations instead.

Top 5 Most Popular Roofing Materials

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

If you’re planning a new roof, chances are you’ve sampled a few roofing materials. Finding the right roofing material for your home can be a bit stressful if you don’t have the proper information. Many options depend upon your geographical location and the style of your house.

Overtime, more and more roofing materials have come on the market that just might be what your home needs. Here are a few:

Asphalt Shingles are the most popular option out there! These shingles are known for their diverse range of colors and affordable pricing.

Wood Shingles & Shakes are a rustic favorite. They require low maintenance and offer a traditional appearance.

Clay & Concrete Tiles are artistic and can last for centuries. Whether you choose clay or concrete, each tile can be molded into barrel shapes for “interlocking installation”.

Composite Shingles can mimic the look of slate, tile, and wood shake. The greatest perk of this type of roof is that it is lightweight, fire resistant, and won’t fade easily from UV rays!

Metal is another popular choice today due to its extreme durability. If you’re looking for a roof that can withstand heavy winds, rain, and hail, then a metal roof might be the right option for you!

Home Upgrades You Need

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Whether you’re planning to sell your home or you’re looking to make improvements on a home you’ve been for quite a while, there are endless types of upgrades to consider. But the most essential upgrades will do two very important things: a) increase your home’s value and comfort and b) boost its aesthetics.

As your trusted Norwalk roofing company, we’d like to help you learn more about which home upgrades you need and why:

Siding Installation
An easy and essential upgrade to any home is new siding installation. One of the most popular types of siding material that is durable and easy to maintain is vinyl, which comes in many colors and can spruce up your curb appeal. If you’ve done research on selling your home, you probably know that first impressions are lasting impressions, so make your home visually appealing by wrapping it in a beautiful upgrade!

Window Replacement
When it comes to your home’s comfort, you’ll want to upgrade your windows. If your current windows are outdated or cracked, your home might not be insulated the way it should be. This means you could be wasting extra dollars trying to heat your home this winter. Not to mention, a window replacement can also provide your home with more natural sunlight.

Roof Repair or Replacement
One of the most fundamental components of your home is the roof over your head. Not only should it have a nice appearance, but it should first and foremost provide you with the utmost comfort. Roofing companies, like Phil’s Main Roofing, can help you make repairs or replace your roof to save you from more costly work down the road (especially if your roof is past its lifespan).

For over 65 years, our family owned company has proudly served Fairfield County and the surrounding areas with our expertise in residential and commercial roofing. Must-Know Home Improvement Tips

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Have you recently sealed the deal on a fixer-upper? Whether you’re looking to make fundamental adjustments to your new home or simply make a few aesthetic repairs, there are three tips you should know before diving into a project.

Aside from the obvious factors that need to be decided on before you can start your project, ask yourself these questions and learn how to approach them:

Will it boost my home’s value?
Start by asking yourself whether or not the project will increase your home’s value. Some projects add more value than others. Not to mention, every change you make to your home will have a direct impact on its value down the road, so it’s important to make an informative decision.

Do I need a plan of action?
A word of advice: don’t bite off more than you can chew! You might have a laundry list of changes you want to make to your new home, but stick to the ones that are more pressing. For example, if your home needs new windows and caulking, be sure to tackle that project before winter arrives (and put the others aside for the time being).

Should I hire a professional?
To DIY or not to DIY - that is the question. Even if you have a little experience and a well-stocked tool box, you might want to lean on a professional for some of the more tricky projects. Especially if your new home is a fixer-upper, you might come across issues that you’ve never seen before. If this happens, you’ll be happy you hired a pro instead!

Are You Making These DIY Mistakes?

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Whether you’re tackling a minor DIY project or planning a new roof installation, there are a number of mistakes that can happen if you don't plan properly. After all, your roof is a fundamental component of your home that keeps you safe and comfortable! Stay smart during your next roofing project by avoiding these common mistakes:

Not doing your research - When hiring a roofing contractor to take on your next project, be sure you find the right one! This means asking for referrals, holding phone interviews, and recognizing warning signs.

Tackling too much
- It’s easy to underestimate the size of a project when you’re eager to remodel your home. But if you plan to do a chunk of the work yourself, you might hit a roadblock, leaving you needing more time and skills than you might be able to handle.

Not budgeting right - You might be enthusiastic about your next roofing project and willing to spend a fortune. Try to resist! For any home improvement project, you should leave cushion room for unexpected expenses. That way, you won’t cringe when you find out you need to pay more than you have in your pocket!

Not taking proper measurements - Be sure to measure accurately to avoid disastrous results. Your measurements should be 100 percent accurate, which means you should measure more than once. Your best bet is to hire a professional contractor to handle this job, as they are trained and experienced.

Not wearing proper gear - When it comes time to perform roofing maintenance and repairs, you should hire a professional. But in the event that you decide you’d rather take on the challenge yourself, be sure you dress properly! Shoes with grips, gloves, and goggles will help keep you safe from debris, dirt, and other hazards.

At Phil’s Main Roofing, we know that sometimes homeowners want to take matters into their own hands, which is why we want to help you stay as safe as possible! But if you’re in search of a roofing contractor in Norwalk or the surrounding region, contact our professionals. Why are Metal Roofs So Popular?

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

If you’re buying a new home then you might be wondering if you need a new roof, and what kind of roof you will need. You may have heard through the grapevine that metal roofs are popular now more so than ever before. That's because they possess many qualities that make them a solid choice for any home:

Durable
Metal roofs are made of either steel, aluminum, or copper. This means they are made to resist curling, splitting, cracking, or withering.

Weather Resistant
With that said, they are also designed to withstand many different weather conditions, such as heat, rain, wind, snow, and even hail.

Style
Metal roofs can replicate the appearance of slate, shake, shingles, and tiles. So if you need a versatile roofing option that offers several other benefits, then a metal roof might be for you.

Eco-Friendly
Did you know that metal roofs are made from mostly recycled materials? Although many homeowners opt for an asphalt roof, metal roofs are known to help save the environment.

Valuable
Most manufacturers offer a 50-year warranty (or even a lifetime) to cover your metal roof. So although they can be a higher investment, you are more likely to save money on costly repairs and maintenance. Not to mention, they can also increase property value.

One of the most essential components of your home is a high-quality roof over your head. Why not choose metal? Between their extreme durability and versatile style, they are an ideal option for every home.

At Phil’s Main Roofing, we offer several metal roofing options for both commercial and residential customers. If you're located in Fairfield County or the surrounding areas and need a new roof, call Phil's Main Roofing today! How Snow Can Damage Your Roof

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

The Northeast is on a lucky streak this season, but we know it’s only a matter of time before the first snowfall of the season. Although the snow is beautiful to look at, the truth is that it can wreak havoc on your roof! That being said, it’s crucial to be prepared for the first snowstorm this winter.

The first step to being prepared is knowing about the damage that can occur. At Phil’s Main Roofing, we know that snow can be a problem for your roof, so we’ve put together a quick list of ways the snow can affect it:

Water Leaking.
Be extra careful if you have a flat roof or a skylight. When it comes to flat roofs, it's easy for water to accumulate when your drains aren't working. And if the water exceeds levels that are higher than your flashing, it could result in water leaks. For those with skylights, it's hard for condensation on the inside to escape when snow builds up. As a result, your skylights could leak. That is why it’s important to remove snow shortly after a storm when it’s light enough outside to see.

Clogged Gutters.

When snow turns to ice, it’s almost impossible to remove it without causing roof or gutter damage. Not to mention, the ice itself can ruin your gutters. That is why it’s vital to remove the snow before it freezes up. If not, there’s a likely chance you could need gutter repairs in the future.

Structural Damage.
If you’ve ever shoveled snow, then you know just how heavy it can be. Although the structure of your roof is strong enough to withstand winds and rain, it isn’t usually made to carry more than a few inches of snow. But of course, every roof is manufactured and installed differently. That is why it’s so important to know how much weight your roof can support and how much snow on your roof weighs.

All it takes to protect your roof from damage is knowing what your roof can handle and what it cannot. To help you eliminate the possibility of leaks and structural complications this winter, turn to Phil’s Main Roofing! We are an award-winning roofing company, serving Norwalk and the surrounding areas. Insulation: Where You Need It Most

 Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Between the snow and freezing temperatures we get in winter, it’s bound to get cold in your home. That being said, let’s discuss how you can optimize your home’s energy efficiency. The best way to ensure your home remains comfortable all season long is to insulate.

While there are several options when it comes to insulating your home, below are the areas you probably need it most:

Exterior Wall - Blown-in insulation is one of the best, most affordable options. This kind of insulation provides a continuous layer of warmth that can make a huge difference in your energy bills.

Cathedral Ceiling - If you have cathedral ceilings at home, insulating them can enable ceiling temperatures to stay close to room temperatures, allowing the warm air in your home to distribute evenly.

Basement - Properly insulating your basement can not only save you money, but also create a more dry and safe living space. Whether your basement is finished or not, insulating it can reduce heat loss in the foundation of your home and shield against damp air.

Attic - Your roof is another area that’s worth insulating. Why? Because it can help you save on heating costs and better your home’s overall comfort. But before you do, make sure you address any air seals and leaks you may have.

Do you have questions about how insulating your attic can affect your roof? If so, contact Phil's Main Roofing today! We are fully licensed and insured in Connecticut and Westchester County, New York, and would be happy to help you with all of your roofing needs. For more information about our services, please give us a call at (203) 838-4545 today.

Preparing Your Home for Winter

 Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

If you live in Connecticut, you know the winter months are anything but pleasant. With all the snow, freezing temperatures, and heavy winds we get, preparing your home is essential.

The weekend is approaching, which means now is the perfect time to think about ways you can prepare your home for the winter months. We know that sometimes a checklist is easier to follow, so below are a few tips to follow as you go:

1. Turn off your sprinklers and drain excess water from your outdoor pipes to protect them from the freezing up or bursting.

2. Place your shovels, snow blower, ice chopper, and bags of salt in a location you have easy access to. Snowfalls in the Northeast region are often unexpected, so whether you place them in the garage or in the shed, now is the time to make sure you have all your tools ready to use.

3. Replace your windows and door screens with storm windows and storm doors to insulate your home and protect your interiors from precipitation. Also, check that you have weatherstripping around your windows and doors.

4. Clean or replace your furnace's air filter to ensure maximum comfort in your home for the entire season.

5. Cover all your air conditioning units to prevent drafts when the temperatures drop.

Taking the necessary steps to ensure your home’s comfort will protect you and your family from the brutal weather conditions that Connecticut brings. To learn more about how you can prepare your home for winter, please click here.

Winterizing Your Roof

Although it’s hard to admit, winter weather is on its way and will be here to stay before you know it. But the temperatures in Connecticut are still pleasant, which means now is the perfect time to winterize your home!

When it comes to your roof, there are a few precautionary steps you can take to ensure the freezing temperatures and snowy conditions don’t ruin your investment. Below are a few things to consider doing as you begin preparing your roof for the changing seasons:

Insulate the attic. Part of keeping your home warm and comfortable means insulating the areas where cool air creeps in. The attic is one of those spots in the home that gets cold easily. And because cool air typically sinks, you want to make sure your attic isn’t too chilly. So look to see if your attic is insulated, and add insulation where it is needed.

Clean the gutters. Once the leaves start to fall, many of them will end up getting caught in your gutters. When leaves and other debris build up in your gutters, it can cause a number of problems. To learn more about how leaves can affect your gutters and how to get rid of them, click here.

Check the caulking. When you have cracks in your roof, it’s easy for rainy and snowy conditions to make matters worse. So check the caulking at the seams and reapply where it’s needed to protect your home from unwanted leaks this winter.

Worried you won’t be able to tackle these tasks before the winter weather arrives? Don’t be! At Phil’s Main Roofing, we are here to help you prepare your home for cooler weather. We offer roofing repairs and replacements to both commercial and residential customers to help you keep your roof in top shape. How to Rid Fall Debris From Your Roof

 Phil's Main Roofing

Gutters are an essential component of your roof and require routine maintenance, especially when autumn arrives. You know autumn is here when the temperatures cool off and the leaves begin to fall. Although leaves may seem perfectly harmless, the truth is that they can get stuck in your gutters and cause a number of problems. Luckily, cleaning them from your roof is easy!

Below are three of the best ways to get rid of all those leaves and bits of debris:

Pick them. Clearing your gutters with your hands is one of the most effective solutions because you have more control to completely eliminate all debris, especially if you’re trying to remove a large branch. Just make sure you wear protective gloves, glasses, and ask a friend to spot you on the ladder if possible.

Blow them. If you have a blower at home then you’re in luck! Using a blower is one of the easiest and most practical ways to rid your gutters of leaves and debris. A blower is a strong tool that allows you to clear a larger portion of your roof at once, saving you lots of time.

Flush them. Flushing out your gutters not only gets rid of leaves, but it also clears them of those lingering pieces of dirt and debris. By using a garden hose, flush the gutter with water so the pressure can force everything out. If the debris isn’t draining thoroughly, check the downspout and clear it out if necessary.

Brush them. Much like picking leaves from your gutters, brushing them also requires you to climb up on your ladder. But using a broom to brush away leaves and debris is simple to do!

While any of these cleaning methods will get rid of falling leaves, the safest choice is to call a professional. Professional roofing contractors have the expertise and tools needed to thoroughly and properly get the job done before winter comes. At Phil’s Main Roofing, we offer several roofing services and can help you clean your gutters in no time! How to Spot a Failing Roof

  Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

When your roof becomes old, you know it’s time to replace it. But what if your roof is relatively new - how can you tell if you have damage? To make this process an easier one, we’ve put together a few tips to help you find out if your roof needs tending to:

Know the weather. If you live in an area where you get lots of rain, wind, and snow then it helps to know how these conditions can damage your roof. Keeping track of how much wind and precipitation your roof is exposed to can tell you whether or not you might have a structural or cosmetic roofing issue.

Look for damaged shingles.
Did you know you can get a good look at your roof from ground level with just a pair of binoculars? To spot signs of damaged shingles, look all around for cracks, curling, or places where they might be missing. If shingles are missing, you might find a few on the ground, and if they’re curling, you’ll see them angling upwards.

Locate water stains. Checking for water stains can prevent a moldy environment, so it’s important to look for signs of damage after a heavy storm. When the weather clears up, step inside the attic and do a little investigating on the underside of your roof's sheathing. Do you see any moisture or soft spots? If so, you’ll want to call your roofing contractor to catch the issue before bigger problems arise.

Check the flashing. While you’re in the attic, it’s a good idea to also check the flashing. On a sunny day, shut off your attic lights and examine the underside of the chimney and stack vent. Spy any tiny holes of light? This can be a clear sign that your flashing is shot and needs to be replaced.

When in doubt, turn to Phil’s Main Roofing! We are here for all of your roofing needs, including maintenance, structural repair, and new construction services. Choosing the Best Time for Roof Installation

  Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

For most homeowners, a new roof installation only happens once or twice, so it’s important to time it right. Scheduling the best time can help the process run as seamlessly as possible. While many factors can affect your roofing project, below are two of the most critical points to consider:

Weather. Before setting a date, think about the weather conditions and temperatures in your location. If you live in a cold, snowy climate, installing a new roof during winter might delay the process or cause an issue down the line. On the contrary, if you choose to start your project in the summer, your materials might get damaged from the extreme heat. In this case, your safest bet might be to confirm a start date for the spring or fall when the weather is more mild.

Timing. Don't forget to consider your own personal timeline. What is the purpose of your new roof and when do you need the project to be completed? If you’re re-doing your roof as a part of selling your home, jot down the most popular times of year for homebuyers. If your new roof needs to be completed for a certain event, ask your contractor how long the project is expected to take and plan accordingly.

Are you in need of a new roof sometime this fall? At Phil's Main Roofing, we are here all year round for your roofing needs and would love to help you with your upcoming project! How to Find the Right Contractor

 Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Your roof is one of the most fundamental home investments you will make, so it's important keep it in good hands. In the event that you have roof damage and need a repair, you’ll have to seek out the right contractor to assist you with the job.

Not sure where to start? To help make this process an easier one, consider the following tips:

Ask for referrals - Before starting the search for a contractor on your own, ask friends and family for help. Make a list of who they would recommend and which contractors meet your local code requirements.

Hold phone interviews - Once you’ve put a list together of the top recommendations, make a few quick phone calls to each potential contractor and ask them these questions:
  • “Do you offer the services I’m looking for?”
  • “Can you provide me with a list of previous clients?”
  • “Are you willing to provide financial references?”
  • “How long will the project take?”
Once you receive answers, you will be able to narrow down your options and choose a company that's most reliable and better suited for your home's needs.

Recognize warning signs - Be cautious if something stands out from the ordinary. For instance, if a contractor only accepts immediate cash payment, ask them why. If the answer makes you feel uneasy, consider finding another contractor for the job.

Write up the details
- Create a contract that lists every detail of the project - payment schedule, workers' compensation payments, start and end dates, you name it! The more information you put in writing, the more you and your contractor will come to a mutual understanding and trust.

If you're located in Fairfield, CT or the surrounding area and are in need of a roofing contractor to get the job done right, turn to Phil's Main Roofing! We are fully licensed and insured in the state of Connecticut and Westchester County, NY, and have been helping residential and commercial customers with their roofs for over 65 years.

What Your Roof is Trying to Tell You

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

A roof is one of the most fundamental components of a home, so finding damage can be stressful. From water spots to mold growth, there are several warning signs that can let you know your roof needs a little TLC. If you catch any of the following problems, it's best to take care of them before they turn into more expensive repairs:

Missing Shingles - If the shingles on your roof are missing or curling, it might be an indication that your roof is either past its lifespan or damaged from harsh weather conditions. The trickiest part about fixing shingles is that it’s not easy to just replace one piece. Instead, it’s usually necessary to replace all of them in order to maintain a uniformed appearance.

Water Spots & Damaged Flashing - Finding water spots on your ceiling and damage on the flashing (the material used around vents and pipes) are both warning signs that you might have a leak on your hands. While water spots are not pretty to look at, they can certainly help you pinpoint where the source of the problem lies. If you're unsure about the cause of damage, give the experts at Phil's Main Roofing a call!

Rotting Soffit - Cracks and rotting in the soffit can be indicators that animals are finding their way beneath the roof overhang. Animals, such as birds and insects, like to find a cozy place to nest, and your roof is a number one spot! If you find damage in the soffit, give your roofing contractor a call to patch things up.

Moldy gutters - Mold and mildew often develop under your roof when water and debris builds up in your gutters. So, if you spy moldy gutters, you’ll want to clear them out and get rid of the fungus.

At Phil’s Main Roofing, we know how important it is to address warning signs before larger problems arise, so contact us if you need help with your roof damage!
