Top Things That Will Ruin Your Roof

Even though the roof is a fundamental part of our homes, we rarely get a chance to see it from where we stand. Unfortunately, that also means we don’t really know if there is damage unless something more visible - like falling shingles or leaks - starts to occur. But since it’s important to know about damage even if you can’t see it right away, we’ve put together the following list of things that will ruin your roof so that you’re aware of the potential problems that could arise:

Tree Limbs. Tree limbs are an obvious cause of damage. During a rainstorm or a blizzard, the bark from trees becomes weak and slowly starts to weigh down. If too much pressure is put on these limbs, they also have the potential to snap. With that being said, it’s a smart idea to inspect these trees if you can to make sure the limbs are secure.

Animals. There are many animals that can cause damage to your roof, such as woodpeckers, mice, squirrels, bats, and even raccoons. Woodpeckers for example, might hunt for tiny insects under your shingles, while raccoons can rip your shingles apart as a way to seek shelter inside your home.

Flashing. The roof flashing around your chimney, vents, and near the edge of your roof is designed to prevent leaks. However, if the flashing is damaged, there’s a possibility that water can seep through your roof, causing rots and leaks in your home. Another issue can arise if the flashing dries out and loosens up, which can bring about even more water damage.

UV Rays. The sun sure does feel good on our skin, but it doesn’t do well for your roof. In fact, the sun’s UV rays can make your shingles dry out and crack over time, which can ultimately cause the shingles to slip off your roof. This leaves the foundation of your roof without the proper protection. While UV damage is a sign of aging, it might also be an indication that it’s time to replace your roof.

How to Turn Your Attic Into a Room

Looking to create more space in your home? If so, you might want to consider converting your unfinished attic into a room. One of the greatest parts about finishing your attic space is that there is a lot of leeway for creativity. From creating wood ceilings to unique storage options, here is how you can turn the attic into your favorite room:

Step 1: Inspect the space.
Before you get started on remodeling your attic, be sure to check that creating a room is practical. The best way to find out is to have your attic inspected by a professional so that you know if there are any local building codes you need to meet. One of the things a professional contractor will look for is that you have at least two exits from the attic or can create them if you don’t have them already. Most other building codes also require that your ceilings be at least seven feet high for safety purposes.

Step 2: Get to the basics.
Once you’ve had your attic inspected, proceed by reinforcing joists and installing subflooring before doing anything else. If your ceilings are slightly on the low side, you will probably want to consider installing a beadboard panel or long pieces of standard drywall along the room too. Also, depending on which style you are looking to achieve, consider applying a high-quality plywood to the ceiling to create a wooden finish.

Step 3: Insulate your space.
One of the most essential parts of transforming your attic into a room is that you insulate it properly. By skipping this step, you could risk losing heat and cool air rapidly, which could make the space incredibly uncomfortable for you.

Step 4: Get creative. Now you’re up to the fun part - deciding what to do with your walls! If you want to achieve optimal space, consider cutting into your walls to create storage solutions, such as cabinets or even a small closet. This all depends on your personal taste and preference, but if you’re looking to build a bedroom, storage space might be the best option.

While you’re upstairs in the attic working on your project, don’t forget to make sure your roof is in order! Inspecting for any signs of wear or tear is essential, as your roof is an important part of your attic. Common Roofing Problems and How to Prevent Them

Phil's Main Roofing

If you’re a homeowner, you’ve probably experienced a leaky roof or broken shingles. But even if you haven’t, we’d like to let you know about a few common roofing problems just so you’re prepared for the possibility! The following are a few common roofing problems to look out for:

Leaks.

A leaky roof is one of the most common issues that can occur. Leaks are likely due to mold or mildew growth, which causes parts of your roof to become weak (when it starts to rain, water can find its way underneath your shingles). However, if you catch this problem early enough, you have a good chance of preventing more costly repairs in the long run.

Storm Damage.
A properly installed roof should be able to withstand heavy rainfalls, strong winds, and even hail. However, if you live in a region where it rains all the time, the water could ultimately ruin your roof. The best way to recognize weather damage is to check for any loose shingles, as the wind can slip underneath and pull them up. In the event that a storm does damage your roof, make sure you have homeowners insurance and a roofing contractor that is on call for any and all of your emergency needs!

Soffit and Fascia Damage.
Before we can understand what is associated with soffit and fascia damages, we need to know what these words mean. Essentially, “soffit” is the wood or metal panel under your roof’s overhang, and “fascia” is a board that runs along the backside of your gutter. The problem with both of these roofing parts is that they can suffer from water damage over time. How so? Well, if your roof drip edge is damaged, rainwater can rot the fascia board and then the soffit. However, if you find some time to clean your gutters, take an extra moment to inspect the fascia board and soffit for any signs of rotting or damage. If you do spot a problem, give the experts at Phil’s Main Roofing a call!

Roofing Terms Every Homeowner Should Know

Phil's Main Roofing

Are you looking to repair or replace your roof? If so, it’s easy to get confused with all of the roofing jargon out there - there are certainly a lot of words that roofing contractors throw around! Now, while it would be tricky to get them all on here, we want to highlight a few of the important terms that will help you with your next roofing project:

Bond.
A method used to fasten shingles or other coverings to each other. Such methods include cross, broken, and staggered.

Covering. This refers to the felt and the outer layer of your roof; both which work to provide protection. Types of coverings are shingles, metal, tile, and slate.

Drainage. A basic feature that is designed to remove water from your roof. This is determined by the roof’s shape, slope, and layout.

Fascia. Boards that are mounted on exposed rafters or at the top of a home’s exterior wall.

Ridge. The outer angle at the top of a sloped roof, specifically where two sides of your roof meet and form a peak.

Sheathing. A part of your roof that is made from wood or another material. This board is connected to the rafters and is used as a base for the roof covering (also known as a deck).

How to Decorate a Small Upstairs Deck

Phil's Main Roofing

An upstairs deck is a great place to relax for a morning cup of joe or homemade brunch. But when there isn’t much room to spare, it can be a little tricky to arrange it. However, with these simple interior designing tips, you can transform your deck into a private outdoor oasis:

Seating. Outdoor furniture is often too bulky for a small upstairs deck, but choosing narrow, slat-backed chairs is the perfect alternative option. Why? Because these seating options allow sunlight to shine through, which will make your space appear larger. Also, when you choose slat-backed chairs, you can use decorative cushions and swap them out throughout the seasons or as often as you’d like.

Lighting. Another way to illuminate your small deck is to either add dangling light fixtures or install recessed lighting (if your deck roof doesn’t have it already) - a fantastic option for those relaxing summer nights. You can even try arranging candles in clear glass vases and place them around the deck to tone things down a notch.

Tables. Cocktails tables are the ideal alternative to a larger, centerpiece table. The reason? Because cocktail tables can fit between each chair and are made of glass, which again, creates the illusion of more space.

Plants. Breathe new life into your upstairs deck by adding lots of greenery. For example, place potted plants in each corner of your space and between your chairs. Or if you want to go all out, try putting tall vines in pots at the bottom of the railing that supports your deck. Let the vines grow and watch how they create a curtain of shade to give you even more privacy!

While you’re upstairs planning out your design, don’t forget to check on your roof! Look for any debris or tearing, as your roof is essentially the fundamental part of your deck. And if any problems arise, your deck could be affected. Cleaning Methods for Roof Stains

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT

www.philsmainroofing.com

Confused by all the conflicting information about roof cleaning methods? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Many homeowners find it difficult to choose an approach that gets rid of all the algae and moss that stains the organic material of their shingles. So, in an attempt to clear things up, we’ve compiled the following list of the most commonly used roof cleaning methods for you to consider:

1. The low pressure method
- One of the perks about using this method is that it does not contain chlorine-bleach or other toxic chemicals. In fact, the only products that are used are eco-friendly ones, such as roof shampoo. These shampoos are an effective way to gently and safely clean your roof. And the best part is, results are instant and complete!

2. The high pressure method - Another cleaning approach is using high power washing methods to get rid of stains. The best technique for this cleaning solution is to hold your hand under the spray to lessen the amount of pressure hitting your roof. But regardless of how you use the high pressure method, it’s a sure way to get rid of the nasty dirt, algae, and moss that makes your roof age more quickly.

3. The chlorine-bleach method
- Roof cleaning contractors who use this method typically mix chlorine bleach with other chemicals like trisodium phosphate. Once the chemicals are mixed together, the contractor sprays it on the roof and waits for it to dry. Then, they reapply and repeat several times (or as much as needed). If you’re looking for a cleaning method on a low budget but still need to get the job done, then the chlorine-bleach approach might be for you.

Remember: a clean roof means a healthy roof! So, regardless of which solution you choose, you’ll wind up with a roof that’s stain-free and will last for years to come!

Make Your Roof Last for Decades

Phil's Main Roofing

Getting your roof to last a long time is easier than you might think. In fact, you don’t need to be an expert at all - all your roof really needs is a little TLC! Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, we’re here to walk you through it! Here are three tips to help you make your roof last for decades:

Follow a maintenance routine. Like any household investment, one of the best ways to guarantee that your roof lasts for a long time is to develop and follow an active maintenance routine. While we know that doing home maintenance on your roof isn’t your ideal Saturday afternoon activity, you’d be surprised how much it can help make your roof last longer! Here’s what you should focus on:
  • Sweep any debris off the roof’s surface
  • Clear any build up in your gutters and downspouts
  • Power wash areas that show signs of moss growth
  • Check for any warning signs of leaks

Catch problems early on. Another way you can get the most out of your roof’s lifespan is to take preventative measures. Make an effort to check on your roof often, so you have an easier time of catching any problems before they cause even worse damage. Here are just a few things you’ll want to keep an eye out for:
  • Worn, torn, or cracked shingles
  • Loose material around your chimney, vent, or pipes
  • Sagging or leaning
  • Damaged gutters and downspouts
  • Algae growth
  • Wet spots on your ceiling

Hire a professional. Even if you’re up for a DIY project, we recommend that you contact your local roofing contractor when it comes to your roof. Working on your roof without the help of a professional can be risky, and if you don’t have the proper tools, you could end up causing more damage than you had to begin with. Professional roofing contractors are trained to perform proper inspections and can repair problems properly. If you don’t already have a roofer, make sure you choose the right one:
  • Take time to interview a few
  • Make sure your contractor is insured
  • Ask about their prior experiences

Avoid These Common Roofing Mistakes

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

If you’re a homeowner who likes a DIY challenge, we applaud you! But when it comes to roofing - well, that’s a different story. Installing a roof isn’t the easiest task if you don’t have the proper tools or training. In fact, if you make one mistake, you could end up with a bigger problem than you started off with, and we don’t want that to happen to you! So, as your Nowalk roofing contractor, we would like to help by telling you the four most common mistakes you should avoid when repairing or replacing your roof:

Mismatching your shingles. One of the worst designing mistakes you can make is to install shingles that don’t match. Truth is that asphalt roofing is manufactured in batches, so if you don’t use a consistent dealer, you could end up installing shingles that don’t match up - what a mess that would be!

Installing one roof over another. Believe it or not, some regions don’t allow you to install a new asphalt roof without ripping the old one off. However, even if you are permitted, it’s probably best to get rid of the old shingles first. Skipping this step could cause damage to your home’s walls and roof structure.

Not ventilating your attic. Don’t make the mistake of neglecting your attic! Why? Because your roof is made up of several components, and that includes the attic. To be more specific, what you want to do when repairing or installing your roof is to make sure you have proper attic ventilation. Without this, your shingles can wear and tear sooner than you’d like, which means more money will come out of your pocket!

Installing your roof incorrectly. Did you know that most roofing manufacturers have set regulations for how roofs should be installed? For example, if you don’t use the proper number of nails per shingle, your roof might need repairs before the guaranteed lifespan is up. The best thing you can do is hire a roofing contractor who has the right tools and knows about specific manufacturing regulations.

So what do you think? If you’re not sure that a DIY task is for you, Phil's Main Roofing can help!
