Even though the roof is a fundamental part of our homes, we rarely get a chance to see it from where we stand. Unfortunately, that also means we don’t really know if there is damage unless something more visible - like falling shingles or leaks - starts to occur. But since it’s important to know about damage even if you can’t see it right away, we’ve put together the following list of things that will ruin your roof so that you’re aware of the potential problems that could arise:

Tree Limbs. Tree limbs are an obvious cause of damage. During a rainstorm or a blizzard, the bark from trees becomes weak and slowly starts to weigh down. If too much pressure is put on these limbs, they also have the potential to snap. With that being said, it’s a smart idea to inspect these trees if you can to make sure the limbs are secure.

Animals. There are many animals that can cause damage to your roof, such as woodpeckers, mice, squirrels, bats, and even raccoons. Woodpeckers for example, might hunt for tiny insects under your shingles, while raccoons can rip your shingles apart as a way to seek shelter inside your home.

Flashing. The roof flashing around your chimney, vents, and near the edge of your roof is designed to prevent leaks. However, if the flashing is damaged, there’s a possibility that water can seep through your roof, causing rots and leaks in your home. Another issue can arise if the flashing dries out and loosens up, which can bring about even more water damage.

UV Rays. The sun sure does feel good on our skin, but it doesn’t do well for your roof. In fact, the sun’s UV rays can make your shingles dry out and crack over time, which can ultimately cause the shingles to slip off your roof. This leaves the foundation of your roof without the proper protection. While UV damage is a sign of aging, it might also be an indication that it’s time to replace your roof.
