An upstairs deck is a great place to relax for a morning cup of joe or homemade brunch. But when there isn’t much room to spare, it can be a little tricky to arrange it. However, with these simple interior designing tips, you can transform your deck into a private outdoor oasis:

Seating. Outdoor furniture is often too bulky for a small upstairs deck, but choosing narrow, slat-backed chairs is the perfect alternative option. Why? Because these seating options allow sunlight to shine through, which will make your space appear larger. Also, when you choose slat-backed chairs, you can use decorative cushions and swap them out throughout the seasons or as often as you’d like.

Lighting. Another way to illuminate your small deck is to either add dangling light fixtures or install recessed lighting (if your deck roof doesn’t have it already) - a fantastic option for those relaxing summer nights. You can even try arranging candles in clear glass vases and place them around the deck to tone things down a notch.

Tables. Cocktails tables are the ideal alternative to a larger, centerpiece table. The reason? Because cocktail tables can fit between each chair and are made of glass, which again, creates the illusion of more space.

Plants. Breathe new life into your upstairs deck by adding lots of greenery. For example, place potted plants in each corner of your space and between your chairs. Or if you want to go all out, try putting tall vines in pots at the bottom of the railing that supports your deck. Let the vines grow and watch how they create a curtain of shade to give you even more privacy!

While you’re upstairs planning out your design, don’t forget to check on your roof! Look for any debris or tearing, as your roof is essentially the fundamental part of your deck. And if any problems arise, your deck could be affected.
