Being that we are in the middle of the Atlantic Hurricane Season and Hurricane Arthur seems to be creeping up on the East Coast, it's important to discuss hurricane preparedness and how you can get your home ready to take on a threatening storm. Unfortunately, hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage and can leave your home in an unpleasant state. Although there is no way we can stop mother nature from running its course, as homeowners we do have the ability to reduce the chance of property damage by taking a few simple precautionary measures. The following is a list of a few ways that you can prepare your home, and more specifically, your roof, for a hurricane:
  • Start by taking pictures and videos of the exterior of your home prior to the storm as well as after. Documentation is always important, as it can help you in the event that you need to make an insurance claim.
  • Check your gutters and downspouts and make sure they are clear of any debris including leaves and branches. If your gutters are filled with debris beforehand, your drainage system will not be able to sustain excessive rainfall.
  • Survey your home for any loose roof shingles or siding and take some time to secure them back to your home.
  • Inspect your attic from the inside out to make sure there aren't any existing leaks. If there are, be sure to patch them up as soon as possible to prevent water and heavy winds from tearing into your home.
  • Take a look at your exhaust and intake fans and make sure that they are covered and securely fastened.
As always, don't forget to connect with a reputable roofing contractor who can help you before and after a storm. That's where we come in!
