How to Rid Fall Debris From Your Roof

Gutters are an essential component of your roof and require routine maintenance, especially when autumn arrives. You know autumn is here when the temperatures cool off and the leaves begin to fall. Although leaves may seem perfectly harmless, the truth is that they can get stuck in your gutters and cause a number of problems. Luckily, cleaning them from your roof is easy!

Below are three of the best ways to get rid of all those leaves and bits of debris:

Pick them. Clearing your gutters with your hands is one of the most effective solutions because you have more control to completely eliminate all debris, especially if you’re trying to remove a large branch. Just make sure you wear protective gloves, glasses, and ask a friend to spot you on the ladder if possible.

Blow them. If you have a blower at home then you’re in luck! Using a blower is one of the easiest and most practical ways to rid your gutters of leaves and debris. A blower is a strong tool that allows you to clear a larger portion of your roof at once, saving you lots of time.

Flush them. Flushing out your gutters not only gets rid of leaves, but it also clears them of those lingering pieces of dirt and debris. By using a garden hose, flush the gutter with water so the pressure can force everything out. If the debris isn’t draining thoroughly, check the downspout and clear it out if necessary.

Brush them. Much like picking leaves from your gutters, brushing them also requires you to climb up on your ladder. But using a broom to brush away leaves and debris is simple to do!

While any of these cleaning methods will get rid of falling leaves, the safest choice is to call a professional. Professional roofing contractors have the expertise and tools needed to thoroughly and properly get the job done before winter comes. How to Clean Your Gutters This Fall

While you might love the sight of fall foliage outside, we’re not sure your gutters feel the same way! Gutters are designed to collect and hold rainwater, so it’s not surprising that debris can get caught in there too. But when this does happen, it’s a good idea to clear out leaves and debris so that your gutters can do their job of preventing water problems at home. To help you get started on this task, we've compiled the following list of quick tips to consider:

Wear protective gloves. Whether it’s twigs or pieces of metal, some objects in your gutters can be sharp. So, before getting your hands in there and clearing everything out, be sure to slip on your protective hand gloves to avoid any cuts or other injuries.

Use a sturdy ladder. Getting high up on a ladder can be dangerous if you're not safe. Rule of thumb is to choose a sturdy, four-legged, metal ladder. Your ladder should also have a place for you to hang your bucket so that you can collect debris without having to climb up and down too often.

Put on protective glasses. Not only do you want to protect your hands from debris, but you also want to cover your eyes. When you’re trying to pull branches and other types of sharp debris out of your gutters, you want to do it safely. To prevent anything from coming into contact with your sensitive eyes, make sure you wear protective glasses!

Always have a helper. Cleaning out your gutters can be a tricky task, so you want to be extra safe. If you plan on physically doing the work yourself, make sure you have a partner by your side to spot you, hold the ladder, and be a second set of eyes if you need it.

Taking good care of your roof is important, especially before cooler weather arrives. And if you live in Connecticut, then you know very well how fast the chilly temperatures can creep up on you. So while the weather is still nice outside, take some time over the weekend to get started on your fall maintenance checklist:

First things first - you’ll want to call your roofing contractor for an annual inspection. Hiring a professional for the job can put your mind at ease, knowing that your roof will be well taken care of! When your contractor arrives at your house, here are a few things they will be on the lookout for:

Cracks or rust on roof flashing - Luckily these are not difficult to replace.
Broken (or curling) shingles  - Curling shingles can be repaired, however, broken shingles require replacement.
Worn out rubber boots around your vent pipes - Usually this can be a fast and easy fix.
Signs of moss or lichen - Moss killers can be applied.

While you’re better off leaving the tricky work to the professionals, there are still a few things you can do to keep your roof protected during fall and winter. For example, if you find pieces of asphalt roof tiles in your gutters, you can grab a ladder, a pair of gloves, and scoop it all out. However, if you’re a little uncomfortable with heights, give us a call!

At Phil’s Main Roofing, we can help you complete your fall maintenance checklist before the first cold week! How to Prepare Your Gutters for Fall

It’s only a matter of weeks before leaves start falling from your trees! With autumn approaching soon and potentially rainy weather on the way, it’s important to start preparing your home for the change in season. One of the ways you can get your home ready for fall is by checking your gutters. Here’s how:

Get rid of debris. Before getting down to the nitty-gritty, make sure you protect your hands by wearing gloves. Then, once you’re ready, inspect the condition of your gutters by looking for other forms of debris. If any are evident, go ahead and scoop it all out to avoid any long-term accumulation. You can toss it all into a bucket or even a garbage bag.

Check the downspouts. After you’ve inspected your gutters, make sure you remember to look at your downspouts. If you have any clogging, it’s important to clear it out so that water can pass through when it rains. This is especially important because a buildup of water can also lead to possible sagging or mildew in your gutters.

Don’t forget about the spikes. The spikes that run across your gutters from the outer edge of your roof help to keep your gutters tightly in place. So, as you’re cleaning out debris, check the condition of each spike. If you notice that one is broken, it will either need to be replaced or refastened.

Address any leaks. Leaky gutters are another cause for concern that need some tending to. With that being said, look for any holes or cracks in the gutters, and mark these areas with a writing implement, such as a pencil or marker. Next, call your local roofing contractor to help repair the damaged areas.

As one of Connecticut's leading roofing contractors, we understand how vital it is to have a well-functioning gutter system working alongside your roof. That is why we also provide gutter and downspout services. For more information about how we can help your property this season, please visit www.philsmainroofing.com or call (203) 838-4545 today.

Removing Fall Debris From Your Roof

Although they seem harmless, leaves and other fall debris are some of the most common causes of dirty shingles. Since as a homeowner, keeping your property neat and clean is likely a priority, it's important to realize that the upkeep of your roof's appearance is crucial to maintaining a fully groomed home, even though it's not usually the first thing a passerby would notice.

As the rate at which leaves fall begins to pick up due to the change in season, we recommend dedicating some time to removing the debris that piles up on your roof on a regular basis. It's easy! See below for three of the best ways to eliminate all debris from your roof:

By Hand: Although this would require you to get on your roof, removing debris by hand is one of the best ways to ensure that you've completely eliminated every leaf, stick or branch that may have found your roof to be their latest resting place.

By Blower: If you're looking for a clean and easy way to rid your roof of fall debris, try using a blower. Blowers allow you to tackle a large chunk of your roof at once and make cleaning your roof a much less manual process since you don't have to pick off the debris one at a time.

By Broom: While again, using a broom would require you to step foot on your roof, sweeping off debris is simple and can be done with just a few flicks of your wrist!

Of course, the best way to ensure that your roof is completely free of all debris would be to contact a professional for help. Professional contractors have all the tips and tricks needed to make sure that your roof is spotless, and the best part is, it requires no additional work on your part! If you're located in Fairfield County or the surrounding areas and need to have your roof cleaned, call Phil's Main Roofing today!
