How to Safely Remove Outdoor Christmas Lights

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Ready to remove your outdoor lighting now that Christmas has come and gone? Taking them down safely is just as important as putting them up. Between tangled wires and gutter damage, there are a number of things that can go wrong if you’re not careful about the process.

Because your safety is our number one priority, we put together a few tips for when it comes time to remove your holiday lights:

Unplug.
Before you start untangling your lights and unclipping them from your gutters, be sure to unplug the lights from your outlets and power strips. This will not only help to preserve your lights for next year, but it will most importantly prevent any accidental electric shock.

Avoid tugging.
It might be tempting to tug your lights off of your roof for quick removal, but in doing so you could cause damage to your home. Instead, unravel your lights slowly, using one hand to loop them around your elbow. This will help to keep your lights in working order for next year!

Watch for powerlines.
Do you have power lines that hang low to your roof? If so, they should be fixed for obvious reasons. But if you haven’t gotten around to adjusting low power lines yet, be wary when removing your lights, as they can easily get tangled. Not to mention it is a major fire hazard.

Check for damage.
Look for pinched or stapled wires, or even broken bulbs. All these types of damages can cause a fire hazard or can be dangerous to touch. If you notice that your lights are damaged, take precaution by making sure all wires are unplugged and you’re wearing proper gear, such as gloves and protective glasses.

If you come across any dangers or roof damage while removing your Christmas lights, turn to Phil’s Main Roofing. Our roofing professionals are here to help with all kinds of repairs your roof might need this month and throughout the year! For more information, visit us at www.philsmainroofing.com or give us a call at (203) 838-4545 today!

Top Roofing Tips

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Preparing to install a new roof or make a few repairs? Your roof is one of the most fundamental components of your home, which means maintaining it can be tricky. That being said, it’s crucial to stay safe and make smart choices by keeping these top roofing tips in mind:

Stay safe.
You know what they say - safety comes first! Before starting any DIY roofing project, protect yourself from danger by wearing the necessary clothing and using the proper equipment. For example, if your ladder is wobbly, consider purchasing a new one. If your shoes don’t have gripped souls, buy or borrow ones that do. Know when you should avoid going up on the roof and be patient if problems arise.

Ask about insurance.
Make sure your roofing contractor has workers’ compensation and liability insurance in case any accidents occur. Ask to see certificates to prove this information and make a quick call to the insurance carrier to ensure that the insurance is valid.

Choose quality.
When it comes to choosing a new roof for your home, come to a fair compromise between quality and aesthetics. Your roof is a huge investment and has the potential to boost your home’s value, so while you want to choose a beautiful material, you also want your roof to last a long time. For example, asphalt shingles are more sturdy than wood shakes, but can mimic a similar style. However, what's most important is that you know the climate you live in and which material will best suit your home’s needs.

Keep gutters clear.
No matter the season, be sure your gutters are free of leaves, snow, debris, and rain water. Your roof can suffer from clogs if your gutters aren’t cleaned periodically, so wait until the weather clears up after a winter storm or spring shower passes and inspect the situation.

At Phil’s Main Roofing, we know that sometimes homeowners want to tackle tricky projects themselves, but just know we are here to help when you need us! How to Prepare Your Gutters for Fall

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

It’s only a matter of weeks before leaves start falling from your trees! With autumn approaching soon and potentially rainy weather on the way, it’s important to start preparing your home for the change in season. One of the ways you can get your home ready for fall is by checking your gutters. Here’s how:

Get rid of debris. Before getting down to the nitty-gritty, make sure you protect your hands by wearing gloves. Then, once you’re ready, inspect the condition of your gutters by looking for other forms of debris. If any are evident, go ahead and scoop it all out to avoid any long-term accumulation. You can toss it all into a bucket or even a garbage bag.

Check the downspouts. After you’ve inspected your gutters, make sure you remember to look at your downspouts. If you have any clogging, it’s important to clear it out so that water can pass through when it rains. This is especially important because a buildup of water can also lead to possible sagging or mildew in your gutters.

Don’t forget about the spikes. The spikes that run across your gutters from the outer edge of your roof help to keep your gutters tightly in place. So, as you’re cleaning out debris, check the condition of each spike. If you notice that one is broken, it will either need to be replaced or refastened.

Address any leaks. Leaky gutters are another cause for concern that need some tending to. With that being said, look for any holes or cracks in the gutters, and mark these areas with a writing implement, such as a pencil or marker. Next, call your local roofing contractor to help repair the damaged areas.

As one of Connecticut's leading roofing contractors, we understand how vital it is to have a well-functioning gutter system working alongside your roof. That is why we also provide gutter and downspout services. For more information about how we can help your property this season, please visit www.philsmainroofing.com or call (203) 838-4545 today.

What to Do When a Tree Falls on Your House

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? The answer to this old-age question may or may not be yes, but if a tree falls on your house, you can bet it does!

Earlier this month, we suggested you trim your trees for hurricane season, but what should you do if a tree has already fallen on your house? When a tree crashes from a lightning strike or a heavy gust of wind, you probably have a number of questions on your mind, like which steps to take first and how to handle the cost of repairs. As your trusted Norwalk roofing company, we’ve compiled the following list of FAQ’s to help you stay safe and resolve the issue:

A tree has fallen on my house. Now what?
The first order of business is to get out of the house using the safest route possible. Once you escape your property, make sure you call the police or the fire department. Safety should always come first!

Will insurance cover the cost of damage?
The answer to this question is usually yes. If a tree hits a covered structure, like your house, your homeowner’s insurance policy should cover it. With that being said, the next step to take after securing your safety is to contact your insurance company. Not only should they cover the expense of damage to your home, but they will usually agree to also cover the cost of tree removal.

What if a tree falls into my neighbor's yard?
It’s bad enough if a tree falls on your house, but if it falls into your neighbor’s yard, you have a more complicated situation on your hands. To answer the question simply, both you and your neighbor should submit a claim through your own homeowner’s insurance policy. This means that each of your companies should pay for the cost of removing parts that fell on your own property and vise versa for your neighbor.

For more tips on how to protect you and your home from a fallen tree, click here.

At Phil's Main Roofing, we understand how important it is to keep you and your home safe after a tree falls, especially on your roof. If you have more questions about how to prevent trees from hitting your house during a storm or need assistance fixing your roof damage, please give us a call at (203) 838-4545.

Your Guide To Choosing A New Roof

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Tips for choosing a new roof from CT roofer Phil's Main Roofing
A roof is just a roof, right? Although the concept of roofing seems pretty simple to most homeowners, the process of choosing a material is more than just flipping through a book of color swatches and comparing small examples of available materials like you would for other home improvement projects. Instead, you will need to invest some serious time and energy in researching how your home will take to certain materials depending on factors such as climate, shape, weight, and of course, your budget.

But what exactly should you consider before sealing the deal? When selecting a new material, always ask the following (once you've determined that it falls within your price range):

1. How long does this material last?
2. What weather conditions does it prove to be successful in?
3. Does this material comply with my local building codes?
4. Is my home strong enough to support this type of roof?
5. Will the material match the exterior of my home?

By answering each of these questions (and in detail, we might add), the process of choosing a material will seem almost effortless. In fact, you might even start to feel like the material chose you!
And why are these questions so important? That's easy. If you choose a material without first figuring out how they will withstand your region's weather conditions or get clearance from your town, there is a good chance you will find yourself turning to your wallet down the road to either a) complete additional repairs or b) start the entire process over again. You wouldn't want to do either, would you?

To learn more about roofing materials and how to choose one for your next home improvement project, contact the team here at Phil's Main Roofing to receive a bit more guidance from roofing experts!

Should I Insulate My Attic?

Phil's Main Roofing
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Phil's Main Roofing, Connecticut Roofing, Insulation Tips
Although Spring is in sight - at least in terms of the calendar - we still seem to be wrapped up in a vicious cycle of winter winter. Between the snow and the ice and its recurring nature, at this point it seems like it may never stop! That being said, we'd like to take today to cover a topic that often makes its way into the minds of homeowners - insulation.

Should you insulate your attic? The answer is yes. And not even just because it can help you save on heating and cooling costs or make your home more energy efficiency - proper insulation helps you maintain your home's overall comfort! And during winters like this, we know just how valuable a comfortable home really is. However, if your attic is unfinished and a lack of insulation is evident, there are a few things you should consider about your roof before you start the job -

1. Do you need any internal roof repairs?
2. Do you have the materials needed to keep air flowing between your roof and the insulation you plan to install?

After all of your hard work, we bet the last thing you would want is for your roof to come crumbling down due to a moisture problem, which is why it is so important to install baffles between your roof rafters; this will help keep air flowing despite the fact that insulation has been added. Furthermore, since you won't want to have to tear down your insulation if you notice roof damage mid way through the job, we recommend checking things out before you get started.

Still have questions about how insulating your attic could impact your roof? If you have any questions or concerns about your roof, contact Phil's Main Roofing today! We are fully licensed and insured in Connecticut and Westchester County, New York, and would be happy to help you with all of your roofing needs. For more information about our services, please give us a call at (203) 838-4545 today.

How to Winterize Your Roof

Phil's Main Roofing
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Although it is only the end of October and it seems like you just prepared your home for the change from summer to fall, the cold winter weather is on its way and will be here for good before you know it. That means it’s time to start winterizing your home to make sure that you’re all set to face the cold temperatures that lie ahead!

When it comes to your roof, it’s especially important to prepare for winter early since low to freezing temperatures and icy weather conditions make it very difficult to do roof work during the winter months. See below for a few things you should be doing now to begin winterizing your roof:

1.    Reapply caulking at any seams where cracks or leaks are evident.
2.    Check to make sure your attic is thoroughly insulated and if not, add insulation wherever it is needed.
3.    Inspect your flashing for any signs of wear and tear from the previous season.
4.    Clean out your gutters to make sure they are free of leaves and other debris that may have built up over the past several weeks.

If while you perform this routine maintenance you notice any damage to your roof, or if you’d like assistance with winterizing your roof, contact Phil’s Main Roofing today! At Phil’s Main Roofing, we specialize in roof repair and replacement for both commercial and residential customers and are also available to help with cleaning and preventive maintenance to make sure your roof is kept in good shape. Stick Frames vs. Truss Frames in Roofing

Phil's Main Roofing
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

The first part of the construction process in roofing is creating the roof's frame. Just like building the rest of a home, the frame provides the foundation for the materials to be laid and ultimately acts as the primary support that keeps the roof in place. When it comes time to frame the roof, there are two types of systems that are commonly used: stick frames or truss frames. The following is a bit of information about each method that can help you choose which style works for you:

Stick Frames:
Stick framed roofs are made up of individual rafters that are all connected to a single top beam. This method allows for more space to be left underneath the roof and is generally used on houses and buildings with cathedral ceilings or attic space. Since they are created piece by piece, this frame is often easier to change for construction in the future. However, stick framed roofs are not as steady and stable as a truss framed roof since they are only held together by one beam and the walls.

Truss Frames:
Truss frames use pre-built wood forms and are created prior to installation. Rather than require your framing contractor to manually construct the frame one rafter at a time, truss frames are installed by using heavy lifting equipment since they are already built and put together. If you are looking for a cathedral ceiling or attic space, this frame cannot be used because they have a bottom base that helps to support the rest of the roof. However, truss roofs are more durable than stick roofs and do not require as much maintenance.

So are you in need of a new roof? At Phil’s Main Roofing, we provide new construction services to both the commercial and residential sectors. We are a fully licensed and insured roofing company that will install only the top roofing brands to make sure your roof is built to last. How To Plan Your Roofing Project

Phil's Main Roofing
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

Before, during and after any home improvement job, there are several important things you must consider as a homeowner. In the initial stages of your project, it's especially important to consider how your renovations will affect you and those around you while making some difficult decisions in the process. Although your contractor is able to assist and educate you during the decision making process, the more you know in advance, the easier your project will be. Sounds nice, right?

digitalart / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
First and foremost, before beginning any construction it's essential that you connect with town officials to go over building codes. Depending on where you live and the size of your property, you may need to obtain a permit for your project. Even if you don't think you need one, it's always best to check to make sure you won't need one in the future. Remember, starting work without being cleared could result in a fine or other consequences.

Once you've gotten the "ok" to move on with your project, work with your contractor to decide how you will dispose of your old roof's materials. We all know construction can get messy, so by planning ahead, you can eliminate the amount of debris you or your contractor have to clean up after the project is complete. Keep in mind that any shingles, felt and nails can and should be recycled, so designate an area separate from wood, metal and other debris where you can place these materials for easy disposal.

After you've decided how to get rid of your old materials, it's time to bring in the new ones. As you plan your roofing project, take your time deciding on a shingle style, shingle color and a warranty. While these decisions can be time consuming, it's better to take your time since what you choose might follow you for the rest of your life!

Lastly, during and after construction, always keep an eye on the status of your roof and begin to practice good maintenance habits in order to guarantee its lifespan. For more information on how to plan your roofing project, click here.

At Phil's Main Roofing, we pride ourselves on providing quality service that can meet all of your roofing needs. Our team of professional roofers specialize in commercial and residential roofing and can provide a variety of services including new construction, modified roofing, structural repair, waterproofing and tear off and replacement. Additionally, we are available to inspect your roof for any damage and can provide preventative maintenance programs to help preserve your roof. How To Prepare Your Roof For Spring

Phil's Main Roofing

(203) 838-4545

www.philsmainroofing.com

After a long, cold winter, the spring has finally arrived! As we look towards sunny skies and warm weather, it's time to survey any damages that the harsh winter weather may have brought to our homes. With excessive snowfall and unusually cold temperatures this winter, our shingles, gutters and flashings must be inspected to make sure everything is still in place and working properly. If you're planning on performing your spring inspection yourself, here are some DIY tips to guide you on what to look for:

1. Survey Your Shingles: To properly inspect your shingles, you must actually get up on a ladder and scan your shingles thoroughly. Look for shingles that are missing, peeling, or losing their grain, and replace or repair any that seem damaged.

2. Clean Moss and Mold from Your Shingles: If you see moss or mold growing on or in between your shingles, it's important to remove it! However, do not power wash the moss or mold as that can remove the protective top layer from your shingles. Instead, buy a roof moss remover solution and spray your roof, then remove the moss with a long-handled broom.

3. Tighten Metal Roof Bolts: If your roof is made of metal, tighten the bolts at the start of spring. This helps to prepare your home for any summer or fall storms that may come your way.

4. Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts: To clean your gutters, get out your ladder and a garden trowel. Start by removing all of the leaves and debris out of your gutter, and finish by cleaning out the entrance and exit of the downspout. If your gutter appears to be loose, don't forget to tighten it!

5. Repair Chimney and Skylight Flashing: Strong winds and heavy snow can cause a home's flashing to become loose. To prevent leaks from the traditional April showers, securely tack down the flashing.

6. Clean Out Soffits and Fascias: Outdoor critters love to nest in soffit and fascia vents, especially during the winter. At the start of spring, inspect your soffits and fascias for any animals that may have nested there for warmth.

Though these tasks may seem simple, having them done properly is more important than ease. If your roof seems seriously damaged or is too dangerous to maintain on your own, it's time to hire a professional. That's where we can help! At Phil's Main Roofing, we are available to perform inspections on commercial and residential roofs, and our seasoned team of professionals can assist in repairing roofs from all kinds of weather damage. Don't put yourself in harms way, call Phil's Main Roofing at 203-838-4545 for help today!

Flat Roofs vs. Pitched Roofs

Phil's Main Roofing

(203) 838-4545

www.philsmainroofing.com

If you're thinking of re-doing your roof, the first thing you should consider is what kind you plan to install. The decision between a pitched roof or a flat roof could be a difficult one, but knowing a little bit about each one will make your renovating efforts a whole lot easier.

Pitched roofs are available in a variety of styles, including gable, cross gable and hipped, and each option is sloped to a different degree. On the other hand, flat roofs have no slope and come in built-up, single-ply and sprayed polyurethane foam designs. We've gathered some information about each for you to use when jumping into the remodeling process:

Maintenance:
While both pitched and flat roofs require regular cleaning and maintenance, flat roofs often require more. Because flat roofs are exactly that, flat, their draining system is not as effective as pitched roofs and are therefore prone to damage and leaks. The majority of flat roof leaks are due to a lack of inspection, so be prepared to leave time to check your roof regularly if this is the style you choose.

Cost:
Usually a flat roof is significantly cheaper than a pitched roof.  However, depending on your location and susceptibility to excessive rainfall, the money you save on roof installation for a flat roof could be needed for future repairs.  It is more expensive to repair a flat roof than a pitched roof, so paying more for a pitched roof up front might be more affordable in the long run.

Structure:
While cost is an important factor in any kind of home improvement project, choosing between a flat roof or pitched roof really comes down to your location and preferences. A pitched roof provides more structure and stability than a flat roof, and they are also better equipped to handle large amounts of rain, so be sure to make location and weather a primary factor in your decision. However, don't forget to think about your own personal tastes. If you want your home to convey a modern look, choose a flat roof or a pitched roof with as little slope as possible.

If you're ready to install a new roof, then it's time to call in the professionals! Here at Phil's Main Roofing, services include flat roofs, modified roofing, roof drainage and re-pitching, as well as repair and maintenance programs. Our dedicated team of roofers will work with you to make sure you have the optimal roofing system and will use the top roofing materials when working on your home.

Leaky Roofs: What to Know and How to Fix It

Phil's Main Roofing

(203) 838-4545

www.philsmainroofing.com

With the snow and wet weather continuing to pour in, it’s no surprise that home owners are experiencing the adverse effects of a leaky roof. Tending to a leaky roof could potentially involve a lot of time and effort, but it could easily be prevented with the proper installation and maintenance.

Follow these top 10 roofing tips in order to properly care for and treat the leaks in your roof.
1. Safety First – While it’s important to take care of a leak in your roof quickly, it’s also important to do so in a safe way. Trying to work on your roof while it’s raining or coated with ice and snow could be very dangerous and could even land you in the hospital. Repairing a leak the right way takes time, so be patient and wait until it’s okay to go outside.
2. Take Precautions – Working on a roof requires you to position your body in ways that are not always comfortable or safe. Make sure to wear the proper shoes and clothing, such as rubber sole shoes, and use a harness if possible. Lastly, always work with a friend who can look out for you and help prevent any serious injuries.
3. Spray the Roof – Before you start any work, use a garden hose to spray water on different parts of the area to locate the leak. Make sure you check the weather though, as it’s not safe to run water on the roof when freezing temperatures are expected.
4. Keep Gutters Clean – Leaky roofs are often caused by clogged gutters, so try to keep your gutters clean. Dirty gutters can often cause the water to build up from rain, increasing the chance of a leak in the future.
5. Avoid Dry Rot – Dry rot comes from a lack of ventilation in the roof. When plywood deteriorates, the roof will sag in and cause the shingles to weaken, crack and leak. To avoid this problem, check that you have a soffit vent and then install a ridge vent. By drilling holes through the soffit vent, cool air will push the hot air out through the top and prevent dry rot.
6. Prevent Ice Buildup – In the winter it’s easy for ice to build up under the roof shingles and in the gutters. When the ice reaches the wall line where the house is heated, it builds back up and creates an interior drip. You can prevent this by using the proper ventilation, rain and ice shields, and installing a drip edge.
7. Fix Roof Boots – Dried up roof boots are a cause of leaky roofs that home owners often miss. Although you may have to remove some shingles and put down better tar underneath, fixing a roof boot is a quick fix and can be purchased in your local hardware store.
8. Inspect Materials – Faulty installation plays a huge role in leaks, and it could also be dangerous if you plan on getting onto the roof. Sometimes shingles begin to crack after being nailed down, and nails could be nailed too low and start to push back up, so always check your merchandise before doing any work.
9. Check Valleys – The valley, also called the ridge, is where two roofs meet at the top. Leaks will often occur in this area because it is where all of the water slides to and begins to move back and forth, putting pressure on the roof.
10. Eliminate Leaks – Try not to get frustrated when you can’t find the source of your leak. If you’ve properly installed equipment on one or more sections of the roof, you can eliminate the areas where you know the leak is not.

Dealing with a leaky roof can be stressful and time consuming, and that’s why we want to help you! At Phil’s Main Roofing, we will repair and install the top roofing brands and make sure that your home is up to date with the best quality products.

Is It Time To Repair Or Replace Your Shingles?

Phil's Main Roofing
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

When is it time for new shingles? Ask yourself, is it a simple repair or a full replacement? As you know, the roof on your home can collect dirt, moisture, and is frequently exposed to heat and cold. It’s important to check your rooftop at least once a year because there will come a time when the roof simply cannot be repaired and instead must be replaced.

Here are a few steps to figure out if its time to call Phil’s Main Roofing:

  • First, go into your attic, check to see if you roof deck is sagging, has water damage or sunlight coming through.

  • Then, if you’re comfortable, climb up onto your roof, find the spot and check for signs such as cracks, torn or bald shingles. (If not, Phil’s Main Roofing can check for you!)

  • Next, check the entire roof in case you missed any spots.

Once you identified the problem areas, you need to make a decision: either repair or replace.

If you decide to attempt this task yourself, be aware, this job can immediately get out of hand. For instance, if there are old shingles under yours, (three or more) you need to tear your whole roof up and start fresh. If the work becomes too hard, try hiring a professional such as Phil’s Main Roofing.

Do you own a roof rake? Many homeowners do not. However, it's a useful tool that can help you protect your roof from significant damage.

Although using a roof rake to protect your roof/home from blizzards and snowstorms can be helpful, it can be an extremely dangerous process for homeowners.

Below are a few tips that can help keep you safe while removing snow from your roof.

Examine: Give your roof a thorough inspection. You can conduct this inspection yourself, or have Phil's Main Roofing come and do it for. The examination should be done in the summer or fall, when there is no snow covering the roof. You wan't to check for loose or cracked shingles as well as a loose gutter. If you see any of these conditions, using a roof rake will only make them worse.

Be on the lookout for icicles: It's important to be aware of your surroundings and that you're watching for falling icicles. After severe snow or ice storms, it's possible for "ice dams" to form. If they do, it increases the chance for large icicles to descend from the roof. Be careful, icicles can lead to serious injury!

Falling Snow: If your roof has a steep pitch, BEWARE! The snow will fall off quickly, and likely on to you.

Be Cautious/Mindful of Power Lines: Do you know where your power enters your home? Often times, power can enter your house through a mounted mast on the roof. It's important to stay far far away from your power lines with a roof rake if that's where your lines are located!

Remember, you can call Phil's Main Roofing to have one of our professionals remove the snow from your roof for you. Often times, when there is heavy snow and it's combined with ice, it can be extremely difficult to remove it. That's where we come in!
