How to Clean Your Gutters This Fall

While you might love the sight of fall foliage outside, we’re not sure your gutters feel the same way! Gutters are designed to collect and hold rainwater, so it’s not surprising that debris can get caught in there too. But when this does happen, it’s a good idea to clear out leaves and debris so that your gutters can do their job of preventing water problems at home. To help you get started on this task, we've compiled the following list of quick tips to consider:

Wear protective gloves. Whether it’s twigs or pieces of metal, some objects in your gutters can be sharp. So, before getting your hands in there and clearing everything out, be sure to slip on your protective hand gloves to avoid any cuts or other injuries.

Use a sturdy ladder. Getting high up on a ladder can be dangerous if you're not safe. Rule of thumb is to choose a sturdy, four-legged, metal ladder. Your ladder should also have a place for you to hang your bucket so that you can collect debris without having to climb up and down too often.

Put on protective glasses. Not only do you want to protect your hands from debris, but you also want to cover your eyes. When you’re trying to pull branches and other types of sharp debris out of your gutters, you want to do it safely. To prevent anything from coming into contact with your sensitive eyes, make sure you wear protective glasses!

Always have a helper. Cleaning out your gutters can be a tricky task, so you want to be extra safe. If you plan on physically doing the work yourself, make sure you have a partner by your side to spot you, hold the ladder, and be a second set of eyes if you need it.

At Phil’s Main Roofing, we understand the importance of keeping your gutters clear, which is why we're here if you need a helping hand! Everything You Need to Know About Roofing Materials

With cooler temperatures approaching, some say that fall is the ideal time to squeeze in those last minute outdoor projects you’ve been meaning to get to. That means you can finally replace your outdated roof with a new one!

But before you get started, you’ll need to decide which roofing material is best for you. Is your head spinning with options? Don’t fret - we’ve laid out everything you need to know:

Asphalt - This type of roofing is the most commonly used. The mineral coating on asphalt roofs

are waterproof, which makes this an excellent option if you live in a climate where it rains and snows often. You can also expect asphalt roofs to last between 20-30 years when installed properly.

Metal - Metal is a durable, fire-resistant, and energy-efficient roofing material that also appeals to many homeowners. One of the greatest design elements of metal roofing is that it resembles other types of roofing, such as wood shakes, tiles, and shingles, except it is stronger and can last for more than 40 years.

Slate - A high quality roof, like slate, is fire-resistant and comes in a wide array of colors. This stone material is made to carry its own weight, and even though it might be the priciest option of them all, slate roofs have the ability to last for 100 years or more!

Tile - If you live in a Spanish-style home, you might want to consider tile roofing. Much like slate, tile is heavy due to its concrete base. And though it comes in many different shapes and lasts for many years, if you have a steep-pitched roof, you might be better off with a different material.

Whether you need help deciding which roofing material to choose or you’re already past the decision-making process, turn to Phil’s Main Roofing! For over 65 years, our family owned company has proudly served Fairfield County and the surrounding areas with our expertise in residential and commercial roofing, including asphalt, metal, slate, and tile roofing. Your Fall Maintenance Checklist

Taking good care of your roof is important, especially before cooler weather arrives. And if you live in Connecticut, then you know very well how fast the chilly temperatures can creep up on you. So while the weather is still nice outside, take some time over the weekend to get started on your fall maintenance checklist:

First things first - you’ll want to call your roofing contractor for an annual inspection. Hiring a professional for the job can put your mind at ease, knowing that your roof will be well taken care of! When your contractor arrives at your house, here are a few things they will be on the lookout for:

Cracks or rust on roof flashing - Luckily these are not difficult to replace.
Broken (or curling) shingles  - Curling shingles can be repaired, however, broken shingles require replacement.
Worn out rubber boots around your vent pipes - Usually this can be a fast and easy fix.
Signs of moss or lichen - Moss killers can be applied.

While you’re better off leaving the tricky work to the professionals, there are still a few things you can do to keep your roof protected during fall and winter. For example, if you find pieces of asphalt roof tiles in your gutters, you can grab a ladder, a pair of gloves, and scoop it all out. However, if you’re a little uncomfortable with heights, give us a call!

At Phil’s Main Roofing, we can help you complete your fall maintenance checklist before the first cold week! For over 65 years, our family owned company has proudly served Fairfield County and the surrounding areas with our expertise in residential and commercial roofing. How to Choose Siding Colors for Your Home

 Phil's Main Roofing

Changing the color of your siding is one way to freshen up your curb appeal, especially if you plan to put your home on the market sometime soon. But before you go ahead and choose one, here are a few tips to help you make the right decision:

1. Glance around your neighborhood - what do you see? Is there a particular color scheme that your neighbors follow? While you don’t want your home to look identical to the one across the street, you also don’t want yours to stick out like a sore thumb either. So, if you find that your neighbors’ homes all have a neutral color palette, consider choosing a similar shade.

2. Consider your landscape - from trees to shrubs, and even your patio design, you want your landscaping to match the exterior of your home without anything appearing to be out of place. With that being said, take a step back and observe how different colors would look against your house - if one color clashes, consider opting for another shade.

3. Think about the size of your house - is it on the larger side or the smaller side? While you might love darker colors, a charcoal or black hue might not look so great if your house is big. Why? Because sometimes darker colors can be too overpowering for a large surface. However, if you home is small, a darker color might add some character to it.

4. Look at your roof - what color is it? When it comes to choosing siding colors for your home, one final tip to keep in mind is how it will look against your roof. If your roof is a darker color, try sticking with a light shade for your siding, and if your roof is on the brighter side, think about warming things up a bit. When all is said and done, the way your siding looks against your roof is a huge factor to take into consideration.

5 Fixes that Add Value to Your Home

 Phil's Main Roofing

Are you thinking about putting your house on the market sometime soon? If so, there are a few
updates that can add a great deal of value to your home. Not sure where to get started? Don’t worry - we’ve got you covered! Below are five fixes you might want to consider:

Give your kitchen a facelift. Making a few updates to your kitchen is an important part of selling your home. Believe it or not, your kitchen is the one room that can either make or break your sale. So, if your appliances are outdated, you might want to think about giving them a facelift. A fresh coat of paint can also make a big difference - just make sure you stick to a neutral color palette that everyone will love!

Find more storage space. From large closet spaces to extra pantry shelves, buyers love lots and lots of storage. In fact, the more storage, the better! With that being said, consider creating an additional built-in shelving system in the kitchen or adding more hanging rods in your bedroom closet - two great ideas to try on a low budget!

Spruce up the bath. Painting the room a bright color and adding new light fixtures can transform your old bathroom into a spa-like retreat homebuyers won’t be able to resist! You can also freshen up the space by adding a few indoor plants, which also increases the flow of oxygen in your home and makes the room more inviting.

Add curb appeal. First impressions say a lot! If a buyer drives up to your home and sees luscious greenery and a clean front stoop, they’re more likely to smile upon entering. So, whether you cut down hanging tree limbs or plant new shrubs, even the smallest finishing touches can make a huge difference.

Update your roof. When a homebuyer sees broken shingles and cracked gutters, they see a fixer-upper. However, if you want prospective buyers to fall in love with your home at first sight, consider updating your roof. Chances are, you might be able to just install a new roof over the old one!

Reasons to Install a Metal Roof

Now that the hot summer is cooling down, you might be thinking about making a few updates to your home - like replacing your roof. As a homeowner, nothing is more important than durability and practicality, so if you’re looking for an ideal type of roof to install, you might want to consider a metal roof. Here’s why:

They have a long lifespan. For homeowners, there’s almost no greater feeling than knowing that you’ve made an investment that’s worthwhile. And when you choose a metal roof for your next home improvement project, a good investment is exactly what you’ll be getting. Most metal roofs can last for more than 50 years!

They are ideal for all types of climates. When you live in a state that has four seasons, like Connecticut, you want to be sure your roof can withstand extreme heat, heavy rainfalls, and blistering winds. Rest assured that metal roofs are durable, waterproof, and will protect you and your family from any unexpected weather that heads your way!

They are environmentally friendly. Selecting an eco-friendly option for your roof is one way to save you money in the long run. Luckily, metal roofs are also environmentally friendly in the sense that they have the ability to reflect light and heat. And what this means is that you can give your air conditioner a little break during those warmer months of the year thanks to your new metal roof!

There you have it - a roof that lasts through all four seasons and will stand strong for many years to come! If you’re past the decision-making process and feel that a metal roof is right for you, contact Phil’s Main Roofing.

How to Prepare Your Gutters for Fall

Phil's Main Roofing
26 Fitch Street, Norwalk CT
(203) 838-4545
www.philsmainroofing.com

It’s only a matter of weeks before leaves start falling from your trees! With autumn approaching soon and potentially rainy weather on the way, it’s important to start preparing your home for the change in season. One of the ways you can get your home ready for fall is by checking your gutters. Here’s how:

Get rid of debris. Before getting down to the nitty-gritty, make sure you protect your hands by wearing gloves. Then, once you’re ready, inspect the condition of your gutters by looking for other forms of debris. If any are evident, go ahead and scoop it all out to avoid any long-term accumulation. You can toss it all into a bucket or even a garbage bag.

Check the downspouts. After you’ve inspected your gutters, make sure you remember to look at your downspouts. If you have any clogging, it’s important to clear it out so that water can pass through when it rains. This is especially important because a buildup of water can also lead to possible sagging or mildew in your gutters.

Don’t forget about the spikes. The spikes that run across your gutters from the outer edge of your roof help to keep your gutters tightly in place. So, as you’re cleaning out debris, check the condition of each spike. If you notice that one is broken, it will either need to be replaced or refastened.

Address any leaks. Leaky gutters are another cause for concern that need some tending to. With that being said, look for any holes or cracks in the gutters, and mark these areas with a writing implement, such as a pencil or marker. Next, call your local roofing contractor to help repair the damaged areas.

As one of Connecticut's leading roofing contractors, we understand how vital it is to have a well-functioning gutter system working alongside your roof. That is why we also provide gutter and downspout services. For more information about how we can help your property this season, please visit www.philsmainroofing.com or call (203) 838-4545 today.
