Everyone knows that April showers bring May flowers, but did you ever think about what else they could bring if they wind up inside of your home? If you'd like to keep this month's rain where it belongs, it's important to determine if you have a leak in your roof before a storm arrives.

Not sure how to find one? We've got the tips you need to locate the source of the problem before it leaves you with a mess to clean up:
How to find a leak in your roof, Phil's Main Roofing
  1. Using a flashlight, inspect your roof from the inside to see if there are any noticeable dark spots. A sign of water damage, these can be your first clue when determining where the water is seeping in from.
  2. If insulation makes it difficult for you to see the underside of your roof, look for sections that appear to be deteriorating. Should any be obvious, start to remove the insulation in that area so that you can get a better glimpse at the roof itself.
  3. Look for signs of mold from the inside. Being that mold requires a moist environment to form and spread, it is a good indicator that water is making its way into your home in an area relatively close by.
  4. Inspect your roof's construction for any nails that might be poking through. If there are any that are visible to the eye, there is a good chance that they themselves are the source of the leak!
  5. Since dry weather can make it difficult to locate the source of a leak, you may have to make your own storm. To do so, head up to your roof with a hose and begin letting the water flow until your partner, working from the inside, is able to visibly see a drip.
Although you might think that a little water never hurt anyone, it sure can if you let a leak go long enough without being properly addressed. To Fix Or Not To Fix: Dangers Of Putting Off A Leaky Roof

So you have a little bit of water seeping into your home through your roof - no big deal, right? Wrong! Although most homeowners look at a leaky roof as something that can be repaired at their leisure, the truth is that even the smallest of leaks can be seriously damaging to any home. Aside from the inconvenience of having a bucket collecting water in your way, leaks also pose a threat to your home's entire structure and can cause things to start crumbling before your very eyes.

To emphasize how imperative it is to have a leak repaired as soon as it is noticed, we've put together a list of some of the dangers that come with one. Check them out below:
  1. Electrical Fires: When water has enough time to seep through your ceilings and walls, the chances that it will come into contact with your electrical wiring is high. Not only does this put you at risk for receiving a shock anytime you plug something in, but it also increases your home's chances of breaking out into a fire.
  2. Mold: Insulation or any structural framing that has been exposed to water for too long is prime real estate for mold. Since mold is seriously hazardous to your health, this is one problem you want to avoid at all costs.
  3. Structural Deterioration: Depending on the location of the leak, you might find that water lands on more than just your floor; it might also be hidden behind your walls. When too much water comes into contact with the wood framing that is holding up your home, the wood will start to become weak and unable to support your walls and ceiling.
At Phil's Main Roofing, we understand how serious a roof leak is, and now, we hope you do too! To keep your roof from caving in, be sure to get in touch with a professional roofer immediately following the detection of a leak. Although you can patch it up on your own at first, the only way to be sure your roof is in good standing is if a professional takes a look.

Leaks In Asphalt Shingles:
To repair your leaky roof, you’ll need a new piece of shingle, a prybar, hammer, roofing nails and roofing adhesive.

1. Using your hands, lift the damaged shingle from the roof.
2. Remove any and all nails that were used to hold that particular piece of shingle in place.
3. Completely remove the damaged shingle.
4. With your prybar, slightly lift the shingle above the damaged area.
5. Measure and cut a new shingle that can fit in place of the old one.
6. Using roofing nails, fasten the new shingle to your roof.
7. Cover the head of each nail with roofing adhesive and secure the new shingle into its place.

Leaks In A Flat Roof:
To repair leaks in a flat roof, you will need a primer and patching system, a brush, scissors and a flat-roof roller.

1. Make sure the damaged area is clean and free of any dirt or debris.
2. Apply primer onto the damaged area while spreading it far enough to touch the undamaged part of the roof.
3. Cut a piece of self-adhesive patching material wide enough to cover the hole and parts of the undamaged roof surrounding it.
4. Apply the patch and smooth it out by hand. After, go over it with a flat roof-roller to ensure all bumps and bubbles are flattened out.
