Must-Know Home Improvement Tips

Have you recently sealed the deal on a fixer-upper? Whether you’re looking to make fundamental adjustments to your new home or simply make a few aesthetic repairs, there are three tips you should know before diving into a project.

Aside from the obvious factors that need to be decided on before you can start your project, ask yourself these questions and learn how to approach them:

Will it boost my home’s value?
Start by asking yourself whether or not the project will increase your home’s value. Some projects add more value than others. Not to mention, every change you make to your home will have a direct impact on its value down the road, so it’s important to make an informative decision.

Do I need a plan of action?
A word of advice: don’t bite off more than you can chew! You might have a laundry list of changes you want to make to your new home, but stick to the ones that are more pressing. For example, if your home needs new windows and caulking, be sure to tackle that project before winter arrives (and put the others aside for the time being).

Should I hire a professional?
To DIY or not to DIY - that is the question. Even if you have a little experience and a well-stocked tool box, you might want to lean on a professional for some of the more tricky projects. Especially if your new home is a fixer-upper, you might come across issues that you’ve never seen before. If this happens, you’ll be happy you hired a pro instead!

Roofing Mistakes To Avoid

Have you ever made an improvement to your home but weren't satisfied with the job once it was complete? Maybe your new kitchen cabinets aren't aligned properly. Or, perhaps small cracks are already starting to form in your new cement driveway. But now let's focus on roofing - knowing just how serious a roofing project can be, little room is left for mistakes by both the contractor and property owner. Although most of the responsibility lands on the contractor (after all, they are the experts), the property owner should always be supervising the project to ensure that no mistakes accidentally slip through the cracks.

Will you be completing some roof repairs over the next few months? Thanks to Angie's List, we've put together a few common mistakes to look out for so that your project can run as smoothly as possible:

  1. Inconsistency: If shingles are your material of choice, you will want to keep any eye out for any that don't match. When roofers use more than one supplier to collect their materials, there is always a possibility that there will be a clear visual difference.
  2. Legality: Most of the time, property owners are required to obtain a permit before they can get started on their roofing project. In order to avoid a legal situation after the work has already been started, make sure to follow the proper procedures and check that your contractor is also in line with what is required on their end too.
  3. Cutting Corners: If you are redoing your roof in its entirety, you will want to avoid taking the easy way out to cut either costs or time. For example, even if your flashing looks like it is in perfect shape, chances are it will not last as long as your new roof since the materials are being applied at a different time. Throughout the process, be sure that new materials are always applied where applicable.
